Automotive Hardware-In-Loop HIL System Integration

As we emerge into the era of composite engineering and hybrid to fully electric automobiles, there is an increasing requirement to develop vehicles within a shorter time frame. Achieving a rapid vehicle development program reduces cost and maximises the impact of a new vehicle in an extremely competitive market place. Electronic systems form a key aspect of modern vehicles that contain increasingly more electronic control units. The increased use of electronic control systems requires that a smarter and more efficient means of development and testing be deployed. Hardware in the loop (HIL) systems are an important technology enabling integrated electronic control systems to be developed within the time frame defined by the vehicle development process and with a reduced reliance on expensive prototype vehicles. Such HIL systems provide a flexible test environment that can be updated and modified as the vehicle and corresponding systems develop throughout the duration of a vehicle programme

Automotive control systems developers focusing on powertrain, HEV/EV and chassis/safety applications have an increasing need to accelerate and improve their development process as to ensure they can deliver high quality and reliable software on time. To identify opportunity for improvement in the development process, we at IoTeach Ltd are accelerating the growth and production for our client by designing ‘Model-Based Design’ using Hardware-in-the-Loop systems

We take our clients through four type of ‘in-the-loop’ technologies that are now widely being used in automotive industry.HIL

Model-in-the-loop (MIL): model-in-the-loop provides an approach to validate control strategy and algorithm in a simulated environment. This can be done early and we deploy tools such as LabVIEW and Simulink to quickly prototype and validate the models. From a HW/SW perspective, there is however no execution of either the embedded software code or the actual microcontroller on which the code will execute. Our prebuilt library for control and simulation could be integrated into model to optimize control systems utilized in the plant.
Software-in-the-loop (SIL): software-in-the-loop provides the ability to use a software representation of the control strategy and algorithm. In this case the software executed is a partial software representation and is compiled for execution on the host PC target. As a result there is no concept of the embedded hardware to be used in the final electronic control unit (ECU) product. We provide services to convert final optimized software into ECU-compliant software format.
Processor-in-the-loop (PIL): processor-in-the-loop focuses on the use of an evaluation board connected to a host PC executing a plant model. In this context the embedded software is compiled for architectures comparable to the final MCU. PIL still focuses on the control algorithmic implementation, just as MIL and SIL do. We use variety of development boards to mimic ECU’s. Often, we take advise from our client on the design of final ECU and upgrade our development board to match circuitry on ECU.

Labview Matlab

Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) provides the combination of executing the embedded software on the actual ECU hardware in combination with a model of the physical system. Prior, HIL stage, we offer complete ‘Virtual HIL and Rapid Prototyping’ systems which are modular and reconfigurable systems that could be tuned, tweaked and optimized until best conditions and control algorithms are fully established. Implementation of Virtual HIL saves time and cost and help our client complete development of ECU in a seamless manner.
